“Making decisions – living independently”: This will be the theme at Europe in Action 2019.

Why this theme?
Making one’s own decisions is a basic human right, but still too often far from the reality of people with intellectual disabilities. How can different forms of supported decision-making, as well as legal capacity and electoral laws address this situation? Which improvements have already taken place? These are some of the questions we’ll be talking about at the conference.
The right to live independently will be another topic, closely linked to decision-making. We will speak about the progress Lithuania and other countries have made in ensuring this right, and about what it means for families when a person with an intellectual disability prepares for an independent life.
The specific situation of people with complex support needs will always be taken into account.
What will happen at the conference?
At this conference, we will listen to people with first-hand experience on the topic: people with intellectual disabilities themselves and their parents. We will also be hearing form specialists working in the field or doing research. The event will be a space for discussion, for exchanging opinions and sharing experiences of how to overcome certain barriers and worries. We hope that through the diversity of speakers, the conference will be a good opportunity for opening up new perspectives, raising awareness of the importance of these themes, and for potential cooperation.
Where can I find more information?
