The promotional video for the award

How can cities become more accessible to people with disabilities? The “Access City Award” is an award by the European Commission which showcases examples of cities that have taken the right steps. The award not only acknowledges how a city has reduced physical barriers, but also looks at progress made in including people with intellectual disabilities. Last year’s winner Ljubljana, for example, has many initiatives to promote employment opportunities.

2019 is the ninth year of the Access City Award. The main award is open to European cities with more than 50,000 inhabitants. This year, cities with fewer than 50 000 inhabitants may participate in one category of the so-called special cultural heritage awards.

The European Commission puts an emphasis on accessibility for persons with intellectual disabilities. Cities are asked how they have

The deadline for applications is 16 September 2018.

If you know about a city in your region which has done efforts to improve accessibility for people with intellectual disabilities, please tell the city administration about the Access City Award. It is an excellent opportunity to promote accessibility for people with intellectual disabilities.

As the cities would like to get in contact with previous winners and other stakeholders a Yammer network was created. This network is an opportunity for individuals, administrations, companies and associations to join the debate and share their practices to improve accessibility in EU cities.

The Access City Award Ceremony will take place on 4 December 2018 during the European Day of Persons with Disabilities conference.

Accessible cities can win the 2019 “Access City Award”

The “Access City Award” is an award
for cities in Europe that are accessible.

This award is given by the European Commission.

If a city gets this award, it means that
this city is accessible for people with disabilities.
For example, because it is accessible
for people with physical disabilities.

Or because people with intellectual disabilities
are included in the life of the city.

Ljubljana won the “Access City Award” last year.
Ljubljana is the capital of Slovenia.
It won for many reasons.

One of the reasons was that it supports
people with intellectual disabilities
to find a job.

The “Access City Award” exists since 2010.
Cities with more than 50 000 people living in it
can take part.
If a city has less than 50 000 people living in it,
it can get a special award.

To win the award, cities must show
what they have done so far to be accessible.

It is very important for the European Commission
that cities are accessible also for people with intellectual disabilities.

For example, cities must show how they have made life easier
for people with intellectual disabilities.

Cities can sign up
until 16 September 2018.

Maybe you know a city that has done a great job
to be accessible for people with intellectual disabilities.

You can tell the city council to take part
in the “Access City Award”.

Taking part in the “Access City Award”
is a good way to talk about accessibility.

Here you can get in contact
with the winners of the past years.
Everyone can share their ideas
about accessibility in their cities.

On the 4th December 2018 we will find out
who has won the “Access City Award”.
It will happen during
